Dynamic probing

Dynamic probing

Dynamic probing is a great technique for proving the depth to a hard stratum. We used it recently at a lakeside jetty site where the piling contractor wanted to know the thickness of lake bed silts overlying rockhead. Thereís a temptation to try and derive geotechnical information from the dynamic probe, and there are published correlations with SPT testing and such like - but itís not advisable. But as a sounding tool itís great, and to help with the interpretation, we plot the cumulative number of blow counts against depth, which helps to identify the changes in strata more clearly.
